TDK Corporation (TSE:6762) has expanded its high-voltage contactor portfolio with two new solutions designed for demanding and harsh-environment applications — the HVC43MC with an integrated mirror contact and the HVC45 with enhanced short-circuit current handling capability.
Designed for applications up to 1000 V DC, these contactors provide reliable and safe switching for modern high-voltage systems, including EV traction batteries, DC charging stations, energy storage systems (ESS), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and commercial vehicles.
HVC43MC: Enhanced Safety Through Integrated Mirror Contact
The HVC43MC incorporates an integrated mirror contact in accordance with IEC 60947-4-1, enabling reliable detection of the main contact’s position. The mechanically linked auxiliary contact provides clear feedback on whether the main contact is open or closed, supporting enhanced safety monitoring in high-voltage systems.
The compact HVC43MC can handle continuous currents of up to 250 A, with a maximum cut-off current of 450 A at 1000 V DC and 2000 A at 450 V DC. Measuring just 74.5 × 78 × 40.5 mm, it offers high performance while maintaining a compact footprint.
HVC45: High Short-Circuit Current Capability
The HVC45 is designed to address the increasing power demands of modern high-energy-density battery systems. It offers a short-circuit current handling capability of up to 12 kA for 5 ms, exceeding the typical 8–10 kA capability of conventional solutions in the same size class.
The contactor supports continuous currents of up to 300 A, with maximum cut-off ratings of 900 A at 1000 V DC and 2200 A at 450 V DC. This makes the HVC45 particularly suitable for applications where higher short-circuit current handling and dependable high-voltage switching are essential.
Reliable Technology for High-Voltage Applications
Both the HVC43MC and HVC45 feature TDK’s proven gas-filled ceramic arc chamber technology, enabling reliable switching performance. Their bidirectional switching capability allows current to flow in either direction, providing greater flexibility for modern electrical architectures.
The contactors are available with 12 V and 24 V coil voltages and are certified to CE, UKCA, and UL standards, supporting their deployment across global markets.
Key Applications
These high-voltage contactors are well suited for:
- EV traction battery systems
- DC charging stations
- Energy storage systems (ESS)
- Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)
- Commercial vehicles
Conclusion
As electrification continues to transform mobility and energy infrastructure, reliable high-voltage switching solutions are becoming increasingly important. With the HVC43MC offering integrated safety monitoring and the HVC45 delivering enhanced short-circuit current capability up to 12 kA, TDK’s latest contactors address the growing demands of high-power battery and energy applications.
